Waxhaws Disc Golf Course Review: A Technical Challenge

Welcome to another in-depth review from my disc golf travels. This time I visited the Waxhaws disc golf course in Fayetteville, AR, and I had a freakin’ blast playing it.

Let’s get into it.

Course Overview

Despite being a relatively short course, Waxhaws will challenge you from the very first throw. You can’t rely on brute strength here, as accuracy is king. Wander off the fairways, and you’ll find yourself scrambling in a heavily wooded area. So grab your most reliable discs and prepare for a challenge:

  • 18 Holes
  • Concrete Tees
  • Titan Pro-24 Targets
  • Established 2015
  • Dogs Allowed

The course is also cart friendly, adding that extra convenience if you’re carrying your bag on a cart.

Course Challenge – Expect to Swear at Trees

Get ready to show all your disc golf skills here. Every hole is a new challenge and will probably require a different type of throw. If you’re a lefty or a forehand specialist, you’ll love the layout.

  • Tee Pads – Though concrete, the tee pads could do with some extension. Currently, they are approximately 6 feet long. This might limit your run-up, so plan your throws accordingly.
  • Fairways – The fairways are a bit unkempt, needing a bit of a haircut. Despite this, the course remains enjoyable and true to the nature of disc golf – wild and unpredictable.
  • Underbrush – Recent clearing has greatly improved course conditions. However, if you’re playing after rainfall, be prepared for some slick and wet areas.

Course Design – Windy Day Friendly

The course layout is what truly sets Waxhaws apart. The holes flow beautifully from one to another, leading you through a dense forest that will test your technical skills.

  • Weather Conditions – The course is sheltered by trees, making it an ideal spot for windy days.
  • Course Signs – The current hole signs are missing crucial hole layout information, offering only the distance. However, the course flow is intuitive, and you won’t find yourself lost.
  • Course Navigation – Exceptionally well laid out, you’ll finish exactly where you started.

Recommendations for Improvement

We loved the challenge and the layout, but this course could be a true masterpiece with a few tweaks:

  • Tee Pads Extension – Extending them by an additional 2 feet will improve the run-up space.
  • Installation of Useful Signs – Imagery on the tee signs will help in planning the best possible throws.
  • Maintenance – The fairways could do with some trimming, and mulch could be added in certain areas to fight the mud problem.

If you’re in the mood for a tough challenge and don’t mind a bit of mud under your shoes, Waxhaws is the course to visit. It’s got heart, character, and trees – lots and lots of trees. Enjoy your game, and don’t forget to celebrate those birdies!
